20 July 2017

Sta. Mesa, Philippines, —The National Basketball Association (NBA) officially turned over a refurbished basketball court yesterday, July 19, and staged two basketball clinics in preparation for NBA 3X Philippines 2017 presented by AXA.

Earlier this year, Jr. NBA Philippines—the league’s youth basketball participation program—introduced a court refurbishment initiative that will revitalize a community court through the NBA Cares platform.

The newly repainted indoor court at Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) College of Engineering was graciously received by PUP President Emanuel de Guzman, Ph.D, who said it would inspire their basketball athletes to excel in their competitions. The PUP Mighty Maroons are champions in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA).

Former NBA head coach Reggie Theus, assisted by Jr. NBA coaches Chris Sumner and Natalia André, conducted a basketball clinic for students of the PUP Laboratory High School as part of NBA Cares. Boys and girls aged 10 to 14 years old learned basketball fundamentals through fun basketball lessons from the NBA coaches who introduced them to skills training.

Later, Alaska invited Jr. NBA All-Star alumni to experience an elite basketball clinic to learn advanced and intensive drills from Coaches Theus and Sumner assisted by Jr. NBA coaches Christian Luanzon, Ewon Rosete, and John Ramirez from Alaska.

Jr. NBA All-Stars alumni from 2014 to 2017 attended the clinic led by national player Rhayyan Amsali, Kenji Duremdes and Echo Laure of the National University Bull Pups; Cy Narvasa and Vince Dolendo of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers; and Rhic Gatuz, JC Macalalag, Robbie Castro and Julian Jugo of La Salle Greenhills. In addition, Jr. WNBA All-Star alumni present were Kyla Flores, Jeehan Ahmed and Carly Monreal of De La Salle-Zobel; Jane Araza and Bonie Solis of Chiang Kai-Shek College; Lindsay Nacional of La Salle College Antipolo; Camille Nolasco of Miriam College; and Jazmin Maniquis of St. Paul College Pasig.

NBA Cares is the league’s global community outreach initiative that addresses important social issues such as education, youth and family development, and health and wellness. The NBA and its teams support a range of programs and initiatives that positively impact children and families worldwide.

Fans can catch Coach Reggie Theus, Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams and the Laker Girls at the NBA 3X Philippines presented by AXA from July 22-23 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. NBA 3X Philippines 2017 will showcase the culminating event of the 3-on-3 tournament featuring men’s and women’s teams of all skill levels and authentic NBA entertainment throughout the weekend.
