Bumina-ang stays unbeaten, escapes Russian foe

By Jun Ray Navarres

Team Lakay newcomer Carlo Bumina-ang survived Russian Denis Andreev in a razor thin split decision victory on ONE Friday Fights 37: Bohic vs. Kacem at the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, October 20.

After the impressive 52-sec knockout on Reza Saedi in his debut last August, Bumina-ang went the long run against Andreev to maintain his taintless record at the Singapore-based fighting organization.

Bumina-ang wanted to continue his quick debut but Andreev held on to evade the Filipino’s submission attempts in the opening round. Bumina-ang went for the ground and pound after his successful take down attempt instead.

Andreev’s knee however changed the mood for the second round, stopping Bumina-ang in his tracks. The two fighters engaged in a stand-up battle to which Team Lakay is widely known for.

Yet, the early aggression and transition from ground tussle to a striking battle gassed Bumina-ang and continued to slow down until the end of the fight.

Despite Andreev’s calculated counters, Bumna-ang was also able to land some decisive blows including a spinning back fist just before the end of the last round.

Two of the three judges gave the nod for the SEA Games multi-medalist to secure his second straight win in ONE.
