Arellano beats JRU, gives coach Aban first win in NCAA

Manila, Philippines – Arellano University made their new coach Junjie Aban happy after they defeated Jose Rizal University, 86-70, on Friday in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament at the FIloil Flying V Center in San Juan.

This is the first victory of the Chiefs since Aban took the place of Jerry Codinera, who resigned from coaching the team midway through the season.

Levi Dela Cruz was hot on his heels after leading the Chiefs to a 23-3 rally in the first quarter that strengthened their position all throughout the game.

The Chiefs banked on Dela Cruz’ triples, which also boosted his other teammates to drop double-digit scores in the game to seal the win.

Dela Cruz shot about five triples in the game to finish with 19 points, while Renz Alcoriza had 11 markers.

Michael Canete chipped in a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Guilmer Dela Torre and Daniel Bayla combined for 20 points for a 5-10 slate.

Meanwhile, Mark Mallari and Leo Esguerra had 17 points apiece as the Heavy Bombers dropped to 2-14 in the team standings.
