San Juan – College of Saint Benilde showed maturity and poise down the stretch as they turned back Jose Rizal University, 71-69, as they inched closer to the Final 4 of NCAA Season 90 on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Blazers grabbed solo third with their 10th victory in 15 games despite showing effects of a long layoff. They had 2 postponed games because of severe weather condition and their last game was way back September 6 against Arellano.

It (long layoff) turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Taft-based dribblers as Coach Velasco noted that some of his players were suffering from various injuries. “We were not that confident coming into the game against Letran last friday because of several injuries. Grey (back), Taha (sprained ankle) and others were getting sick because of the inclement weather” says coach Gabby. “Good thing we survived this game and got the win. It gives us confidence going into the next game (against Perpetual)”

Paolo Taha and Mark Romero again proved to be the steady contributors for the Blazers. Taha finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists while Romero added 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Also giving a spark to the Blazers’ rally was veteran guard Luis Sinco, who scored 12 points including 2 triples in the fourth quarter.

Philip Paniamogan paced the Heavy Bombers with 19 points.
