La Salle gets back-to-back wins, destroys UST

ANTIPOLO – De La Salle University thrashed University of Santo Tomas and completed an elimination sweep in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament with a 110-69 win, Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center.

With the win, the Green Archers strengthened their hold of third spot with a 7-4 win-loss record.

Aljun Melecio had eight points in the first quarter that boosted the Archers take an early 16-point lead in the first quarter, 29-13.

La Salle’s lead could only balloon up to as high as 48 points, with UST unable to cut the deficit to a single-digit.

For former La Salle coach Aldin Ayo, UST’s 41-point loss is now his worst game thus far in his coaching career.

Melecio finished with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Mark Dyke had his career-high 16 markers and six boards.

Andrei Caracut chipped in 15 points, three assists and three rebounds, while Jollo Go got 14 markers. Justine Baltazar and Encho Serrank added 13 points each.

On the other hand, UST struggled against La Salle and dropped to a 5-6 slate, now on fifth place with Far Eastern University, with only two players finishing with a two-digit score.

Team captain Marvin Lee had 26 points, while super rookie CJ Cansino chipped in 14 markers, nine boards and three assists in the losing effort.
