La Salle crushes UP to force a 5-1 tie

By Ardyn Gonzales

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers swept and kept the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons winless, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Angel Canino tallied 16 points in their fifth win in six games, while Shevana Laput and Thea Gagate added nine and eight points, respectively. The Lady Spikers were in a hurry as they only needed an hour and a half to finish the sweep.

With a 2-0 advantage, La Salle’s second stringers were also given quality minutes in the third. Julieann Levina and Lilay del Castillo had three points apiece, while Babyjane Soreno chipped in four.

Up 20-15 in the third frame, a combination attack in the middle for Levina extended the lead to six.

UP tried to pull off a late run and scored three points, 23-18, but del Castillo came out clutch as she attacked from the middle and then put up a kill block to finish the match.

Since their loss to UST, La Salle won three consecutive matches and is tied with NU at 5-1. One team will get a second loss as they battle it out in their last match of the first round in the elimination.

Meanwhile, UP is still in the hunt for their first win of the season.
