The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles swept the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in their first straight sets win, 25-20, 25-22, 28-26 in UAAP Women’s Volleyball, Sunday, at FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan.

Ateneo came out strong in the first two sets, banking on their formidable offense and strong service to disrupt the game plan for UP. Jhoana Maraguinot closed out both sets for the Lady Eagles with a service ace and a through-the-block hit respectively.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Maroons tried to recover in the third frame and built a 4-0 lead to start the set. Ateneo responded quickly with their own run to tie the match at 10-all. From then on, it was a seesaw battle between the two teams until the Lady Eagles were the first ones to reach match point 24-23.

Tots Carlos kept UP alive and saved two match points, but it was also her own two attack errors that gave the Ateneo their fourth consecutive wins.

Former rookie of the year Jules Samonte led Ateneo with 15 points, while Jhoana Maraguinot added 11 markers.

The duo of Tots Carlos and Isa Molde continued to star for UP, with 20 and 16 points respectively.

Player of the Game: Deanna Wong, 33 excellent sets.
