Manila, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas seems to love surprising everyone in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament after pouncing over the Far Eastern University, 78-70, Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

With their third consecutive win, the Tigers stayed golden as they claimed solo fifth in the tournament with a 4-4 win-loss record.

Team captain Marvin Lee dominated in the three-point area as he exploded back-to-back triples in the payoff period that gave the Tigers a much-needed push to start a rally.

Zachary Huang and Renzo Subido was right behind Lee as they took on a 16-3 run to pull away from the Tamaraws and sealed the win for an elimination sweep of FEU.

UST snapped FEU’s winning streak, which came from leading teams Adamson and Ateneo, as they also dropped to a 5-3 record. The Tamaraws remain winless against coach Aldin Ayo since 2016.

Huang paved the way for the Tigers with 20 points and six rebounds, while Lee chipped in 17 markers, five assists and two steals. Subido added 14 points for the win.

Rookie Germy Mahinay exceeded everyone’s expectations after coming out of the shadows of Steve Akomo and injured Enrique Caunan, as he finished with his career-best 10 points and eight rebounds.

Richard Escoto led FEU with 12 points and five rebounds, while Arvin Tolentino had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds before leaving the game due to a disqualifying foul.
