Pontejos, Carlos advance to FIBA 3×3 World Cup side events

BOCAUE, Bulacan – Perlas Pilipinas’ Janine Pontejos tops the FIBA 3×3 World Cup shootout qualifiers, while Filipino dunker David Carlos advances to dunk finals, Sunday at the Philippine Arena.

Pontejos proved her sweet shooting by leading the pack on the first leg of the shootout contest among other 10 players who joined the side event. The Filipina scored six two-pointers in just 22 seconds, beating China’s Jiang Jiayin, who shot six two-pointers in 30 seconds.

Switzerland’s Evita Herminjard, Spain’s Paula Palomares and Kazakhstan’s Tamara Yagodkina follows behind after tallying five two-pointers each.

The second leg of the competition will continue on Day 4 of FIBA 3×3.

The top two players of the 20 participants will qualify for the shootout contest Finals happening on Day 5, June 12, which already has Croatia’s Marin Hrvoje and Russia’s Maksim Dybovskii.

Dunk Qualification

Filipino pro dunker Carlos became Philippines’ sole finalist in the FIBA 3×3 World Cup 2018 dunk qualifiers.

Carlos tallied 47 points in his two dunks to make it to the second round of the event, which is set on Tuesday where he’ll take his chance of earning a spot in the finale.

For his first act, the 2017 FIBA 3×3 World Tour Chengdu Masters Slam Dunk winner began by jumping over four people and take on a clean dunk. In the second round, Carlos took on a two-handed reverse dunk, earning him the second best slam.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Guy “Frequent Flyer” Dupuy topped the contest with 53 points. Ukraine’s Vadym Piddubchenko and Dmytro Krivenko finished with 48 and 47 points, respectively.

Another Philippine bet, Rey Guevarra, failed to advance after three unsuccessful attempts in the second round, earning him 19 points and 6th place in the contest.
