Lyceum sweeps first round, outlasts San Beda in thriller

Manila, Philippines – Two of the best teams in the league finally faced each other, but only one remains on top.

Lyceum of the Philippines University remains unbeaten in nine games after claiming a 73-66 win over San Beda University in the NCAA Season 94 senior’s basketball tournament, Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

CJ Perez and Nino Ibanez exploded in the fourth quarter that boosted the Pirates for a 9-2 run to claim a 67-64 advantage.

AC Soberano shot his two freebies to keep the Red Lions at bay, 67-66, but it was also San Beda’s last point in the game as the Pirates strengthened their defense.

Perez hit another triple in the last 28 seconds of the game that eventually led them to seal their ninth consecutive win.

Perez led Lyceum with a double-double record of 22 points and 13 rebounds on top of three assists and two steals, while JC Marcelino added 13 markers off the bench.

Spencer Pretta chipped in another 11 points in the winning effort.

On the other hand, Donald Tankoua had 19 points and 18 rebounds, while Robert Bolick finished with 18 points as San Beda dropped to a 7-1 slate.

In the first game, Letran nipped Mapua. 84-63 to improved their standings to 5-3 while Mapua fell to 2-7.

San Beda 66 – Tankoua 19, Bolick 18, Mocon 10, Soberano 10, Canlas 4, Doliguez 3, Eugene 2, Abuda 0, Nelle 0, Presbitero 0, Oftana 0, Tongco 0.
