BLAZERS SLIP PAST CARDINALS TO NOTCH SECOND WIN

The St. Benilde Blazers are back on their game after snapping its four-game losing skid against Mapua University, 74-69, Tuesday in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre.

“I’m just super happy and super enthusiastic right now,” said St. Benilde Coach TY Tang. “It’s been awhile since we won a game.”

The Blazers was able to make a run in the third quarter to end a 56-41 deficit to grab back the lead in the fourth, 65-64. St. Benilde was able to maintain their lead until the final minute in the game, 72-69, when Andoy Estrella’s attempted three point shot almost hit for an overtime.

Estrella failed to push the Cardinals for the overtime, while Rene Sta. Maria capped off the win for the Blazers with two shout from the foul line.

Despite having three men out on the sidelines due to injuries, St. Benilde was able to overcome the Cardinals with JJ Domingo leading the squad with his new career-high 24 points and four rebounds.

Clement Leutcheu added a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds. Carlo Young had 13 points and four rebounds, while Edward Dixon added another double-double for the team with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Christian Bunag, on the other hand, led Mapua with a double-double 13 markers, 11 boards and three blocks. Estrella, Kim Magboo and JP Nieles added 12 points each.
St. Benilde Blazers improved to 2-4 win-loss record in the team standings, while Mapua fell to the lowest, 1-5 slate.

The Blazers will face the San Sebastian Golden Stags on Friday, August 11, while Mapua Cardinals will take on the San Beda Red Lions on the same day.
