Gilas Pilipinas manhandles India for 1st win in FIBA Asia Cup

Gilas Pilipinas had no trouble chalking up their first win in the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 as they blasted India, 101-59, on Friday, July 15, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Filipino cagers led from start to finish in tallying the 42-point romp, allowing them to bounce from a 95-80 loss to Lebanon the last time out.

William Navarro paced Gilas with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting

Thirdy Ravena added 17 points, 12 came in the first two quarters of play as Gilas erected a 51-33 lead at the bend.

Bobby Ray Parks contributed 12 points, four assists and three steals for Gilas, who improved to 1-1 (win-loss)—good for third place Group D behind co-leaders New Zealand and Lebanon.

The Nationals’ easy win came with a price as center Poy Erram went down in the third quarter due to foot injury.

Erram left in the 5:13 mark of the third period after colliding with an opponent.

Erram left shortly after Parks buried a trifecta that gave Gilas a 65-35 lead.

Gilas outscored India in the third canto, 31-10, that paved the way for the 42-point rout.

The Filipinos will next play New Zealand on Sunday, July 17.
