CEBU CITY—The rampaging Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras sustained their fiery start after they whipped the suddenly struggling Joemangs Surplus-University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 88-79, in the college division of the 2019 Cesafi Partner’s Cup last Saturday, June 22, at the Cebu Coliseum.
SWU looked headed to an easy win when they led by as many as 22 points in the third period. UC came roaring bank and closed the gap to 77-81 in the final 1:33.
The Cobras heaved a huge sigh relief when Shaquille Imperial connected on a three-pointer that finally knocked off the rallying Webmasters.
Lamine Thiam showed the way for the Cobras with 21 points. Imperial and Red Cachuela donated 15 each, while Gerald Fernandez added 12.
Tosh Sesay paced UC with 21 points.
In the other seniors match, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers finally barged into the win column with a tight 95-92 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.
RR Cauba helped seal USPF’s first win in three games by firing 19 points, including a critical layup in the final 33.6 seconds.
Miguel Gastador tallied a game-high 25 points for the Jaguars, who slid to 1-3.
In the high school division, the ARQ Builders-University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers hiked their recor to 4-0 after they walloped the University of Cebu-Lapu Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) Campus, 77-66.
Albert Sacayan once again spearheaded UV with 26 points, while John Banzon contributed 21.
UCLM dropped to 0-4.
The Cebu Landmasters-SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, on the other hand, tripped the Cebu Elite-University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 81-47.
Justin Maglasang topped Ateneo de Cebu with 13 points while LA Casinillo and Joey Villamayor donated 10 apiece.
