UC stays unbeaten with fight-marred win in Cesafi Partner’s Cup

20 June 2019

CEBU CITY—The Hotel Fortuna-University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters hammered out a tension-filled 75-60 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers last Thursday, June 20, in the high school division of the 2019 Cesafi Partner’s Cup at the University of San Carlos (USC)  Gym.

Victory was already in the bag for the Baby Webmasters but tempers flared after UC’s Van Sevillejo and USPF’s Elijah Singson went at it in the final 20 seconds of the match.

Assistant coaches from opposing teams joined the fray but the proverbial cooler heads intervened, preventing what could have been an ugly free-for-all.

Referees tossed Sevillejo and Singson as well as the assistant coaches of both teams.

Luther Leonard fired 12 points, Dane Lapiz pitched in 11, while Earl Polinar had 10 in a balanced attack for UC, which stayed unbeaten after four games.

Jerwin Espina led USPF with 15 points, while Christopher Isabelo donated 14.

In the college division, the Cebu Landmasters-University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors posted their third victory with a 75-66 spanking of the Tough Gear-Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats.

Froilan Mangubat erupted for 23 points, while Kurt Trangia added 17 markers as the Warriors tied the UC Webmasters at the number one spot with similar 3-1 (win-loss) records.

Trangia was extra hot in the payoff period where he dropped 14 of his total output that helped UC cool off the rallying Wildcats.

CIT-U, which fell to 0-4, got 14 points from Mark Kong.
