Strawweight talent Jenelyn Olsim, Team Lakay’s third female fighter to represent the stable in ONE Championship is ready to turn heads in her main roster debut.
Olsim has been absorbing all the teachings that renowned coach Mark Sangiao has been imparting to her ever since in Rich Franklin’s ONE Warrior Series.
Now that she’s about to compete in the main roster of ONE Championship, Sangiao has nothing but praises for the 24-year-old fighter.
“As an athlete, Jenelyn Olsim is very driven. She has that lion heart and iron will, a fighter who doesn’t give up easily even if she’s already physically and mentally at her limit. That’s the kind of fighter we breed here at Team Lakay, and Jenelyn has all the qualities necessary to be successful in this sport,” said Sangiao.
“As a person, she’s very nice, though she doesn’t talk too much. She has that Ibaloi Igorot trademark, which means ‘shy kami mango’ (translated as Ibaloi people are shy).”
Despite being the younger fighter, Sangiao believes that Olsim can take down the Brazilian Maira Mazar when they meet inside the Circle at ONE: FISTS OF FURY III on Friday, March 19.
According to Sangiao, for Olsim, the sky is the limit and they are working hard in developing her skills as a fighter.
“Of course, she’s not a perfect fighter. We’re still polishing her game, but she’s adapting very well… Part of what makes her a great fighter is her attitude. She’s humble and coachable, and really takes lessons to heart. I know she’s heading to great things in her MMA career,” said Sangiao.
“She’s a diamond in the rough, tough as nails, and has immense mental strength.”
The debut might be difficult for Olsim as Mazar is the current no. 5-ranked contender in the women’s strawweight and is fresh from a TKO victory over Choi Jeong Yun but coach Sangiao has worked hard on crafting a winning game plan for Olsim.
“We can’t underestimate anyone in this game. I have no doubt that Maira Mazar will come very equipped, but we are also. We’ll put up a good fight and a good show. I’m confident in Jenelyn,” said Sangiao.
“When two great athletes come together to compete in the Circle, it’s always fun for the fans. We’re ready to bring home the victory.”
