NU shrugs off first set loss to overcome UP in four sets

By Ardyn Gonzales

After a heartbreaking loss in their previous match, the National University Lady Bulldogs defeated the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in four sets, 18-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-11, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament, Wednesday, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The bounce back win was not without struggles as they suffered a shocking first set loss against the Lady Maroons where they tallied double-digit unforced errors.

The defending champions quickly recovered in the succeeding sets where they displayed their usual dominating performance led by Sheena Toring, Alyssa Solomon, and rookie Vangie Alinsug.

UP tried to keep within striking distance in the fourth, 9-all, but the heavy serves of Toring sparked a 10-0 run to build a comfortable lead. The Lady Maroons only scored two more points before Alinsug fired off a service ace to complete the win.

The number one best serving team Lady Bulldogs tallied 16 service aces in four sets.

Sheena Toring led all scorers with 14 points, while Vangie Alinsug and Alyssa Solomon had 13 points each. Cess Robles and Erin Pangilinan were not far behind with 11 and 9 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Bustrillo was the lone double-digit scorer in UP with 13.
