Manila, Philippines – Colegio de San Juan de Letran just made history after defeating Lyceum of the Philippines University, 80-79, on Friday in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Letran became the second team to demolish the Pirates in the elimination round in two years, besides the University of Perpetual Help.
Team captain Bong Quinto and JP Calvo’s heroics in the second half paved off as they managed to conquer the gritty Lyceum to lift their records up in the team standings with an 11-4 win-loss record.
After Quinto accumulated his fourth technical foul in the game, he had to sit on the bench for quite a while and leave it to his other teammates to do the job.
Calvo stepped up to the challenge and led the Knights to inch within a close range with Letran in the fourth until Quinto re-entered the game with only seven minutes left.
Quinto took the lead from there with only less than two minutes in the game, 80-77.
The Pirates banked on stalwart Jaycee Marcelino, who dropped a triple in the last 40 ticks.
The game could have went to overtime if the game officials did not review Marcelino’s shot that showed it was just a two-pointer, giving Letran a one-point lead, 80-79.
Larry Muyang finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, while Quinto added 20 markers and seven boards.
Calvo chipped in 18 points, seven boards and four assists.
