After squandering a huge lead in the opening set, the University of Sto. Tomas Lady Tigresses outlasted the University of the East Lady Warriors, 30-32, 25-18, 25-16, 25–14, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball, Saturday, at FilOil EcoOil Centre.
UST ended the first round on a good note as they sit at the upper half of the standings.
Leading 16-6 in the opening set, UE slowly inched closer within striking distance, taking advantage of UST’s decision to field in their second stringers. Former USTHS player KC Cepada’s consecutive attacks completed the come-from-behind win of UE in a long extended set.
The Lady Tigresses immediately recovered in the succeeding sets, displaying their prowess in both offense and defense. UST tallied five kill blocks alone in the fourth set, guarding Ja Lana and Van Bangayan’s strong attacks.
Eya Laure carried the scoring load for UST with 18 points, 14 of which came from attacks. She added three blocks, an ace to go with six excellent digs.
Former USTHS players KC Cepada and Van Bangayan’s surely made their previous coach Kung Fu Reyes, leading UE with 12 and 11 markers. They ended the first round with a 0-7 win-loss record.
