By Ardyn Gonzales

The University of Sto. Tomas Lady Tigresses continued its perfect run after defeating upset-conscious Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagle, 25-17, 27-25, 23-25, 26-28, 15-13, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament, Wednesday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

After building a 2-0 advantage in the match, including the come from behind second set win, the Lady Eagles slowly gained momentum and challenged UST in tight sets three and four.

With Sobe Buena, Zel Tsunashima, and Lyann de Guzman working wonders for Ateneo, they were able to drag UST into a rubber set.

In the fifth set, UST was quick to recover, even after a one-point lead by the Lady Eagles, 8-7. Cassie Carballo took over with a smart dump followed by a service ace to steal the advantage.

Just as UST was pulling away, 13-10, Tsunashima came up big as she did it on offense and defense to force a 13-all deadlock.

However, Jonna Perdido knew what to do and scored back-to-back crucial points for UST to prevent a reverse and upset sweep.

Angge Poyos once again led the Lady Tigresses with 22 points, while player of the game Reg Jurado was not far behind with 19.

Meanwhile, de Guzman also finished with 22 points of her own for the Lady Eagles. Sobe Buena and Zel Tsunashima also had a productive day with 21 points apiece.
