CEBU CITY—The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors needed an extra five-minute session before scoring a fight-marred 76-72 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers on Thursday, October 10, in the college division of the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Victory was already in the bag for USC as it was ahead, 76-71, with only 2.5 seconds left when a fight broke out between USPF’s Steven Ursal and USC’s Kenneth Brillo.
In a video that has started circulating on social media a day after the game, Ursal appeared to have punched Brillo in the face as they battled for a rebound after a missed free throw by a USC player.
Brillo retaliated with a series of punches that wobbled Ursal.
Fortunately, cooler heads intervened, preventing the incident from escalating.
Ursal and Brillo were tossed as well as USC’s Froilan Mangubat for entering the court during the commotion.
Jules Langres erupted for 29 points, 13 of them came in the third where USC fought back from a 15-point deficit.
Marata added 17 markers, including a triple that beat the regulation buzzer, sending the match into overtime.
USC, thus, improved to 6-3 (win-loss), while USPF dropped to 3-6.
