CEBU CITY—The University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters and the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras held off their respective opponents to pick up crucial wins in the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (CESAFI) Partner’s Cup on Thursday, July 4, at the Cebu Coliseum.
UC displayed the needed poise down the stretch to turn back the Sacred Heart School -Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 60-56, in the high school division, while SWU bounced back from a previous loss by thwarting the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 70-55, in the college division.
Kenyon Pondoc and Dante Lapiz helped UC pockets its third win in five outings by firing 12 points each.
The Baby Webmasters averted a major letdown as they nearly wasted leads of as many as 20 points.
The Magis Eagles moved within 56-60 inside the final one-minute zone of the contest but committed a costly turnover with 30 seconds left, allowing the Baby Webmasters to escape.
LA Casinillo and Reymark Narbasa tallied 12 markers apiece for the Magis Eagles, who absorbed their second loss in five games.
Meanwhile, Senegalese reinforcement Lamine Thiam collected 17 points and Red Cachuela dumped 16 markers as SWU quickly bounced back from a sorry loss to the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and moved to 4-1 (win-loss).
Dyll Roncal netted 14, while Shaquille Imperial contributed 11 for SWU, which raced to a 35-15 start.
The Warriors tried to rally but the best they could do was to trim the lead to eight in the payoff period, 47-55.
Froilan Mangubat scattered 23 markers for the Warriors, who dropped to 3-3.
