The tandem of Arielle Estrañero and Diana Carlos got the better of La Salle’s Desiree Cheng and Tin Tiamzon as they pulled off a big win against the defending champs 21-18, 21-15, in Day 1 of UAAP Season 79 Beach Volleyball Tournament at MOA Sands by the Bay.

After winning against Adamson earlier 21-18, 21-16, the Lady Maroons had a rough start in the early part of the first set giving free points to La Salle off unforced errors.

However, they managed to overcome their slow start by capitalizing on the faulty defense of the Lady Spikers. Sophomore Tiamzon tried to come back with series of well-placed shots to pull within 20-18 but her service error gave the set to UP.

Cheng started the second frame with three consecutive aces but their unforced errors together with the attacks of Carlos, once again gave the lead to UP 7-3. The Lady Maroons, through their strong offense and defense, never looked back and eventually got the set winning the game in just two sets.

UP and La Salle—now with a 2-0 and 1-1 records respectively—have a tough assignment ahead of them as both will face the still undefeated and title favorite UST led by former MVP Cherry Rondina in Day 2 of UAAP Beach Volley today.
