The San Beda Red Lions roared their way through to their 10th straight win and took a better hold on second seed after dispatching San Sebastian Golden Stags, 76-65 on Friday in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre.
San Beda was on a hot start after taking a huge lead in the first period, 24-9 and San Sebastian could only cut its deficit to as low as six points, 70-64, by the last quarter.
“It’s our defense that stepped up in this game. We had a tough time preparing for San Sebastian,” said San Beda Coach Boyet Fernandez. “They have a good coach (Egay Macaraya) and good players like Michael Calisaan.”
The Stags fell short from defense after being outrebounded by the Red Lions, 45-25 and limited San Sebastian to a 37.88 percent shooting from the floor.
With an 11-1 slate, San Beda is just a game behind the number one seed Lyceum Pirates, who has a clean 12-0 record in the team standings. San Sebastian, on the other hand, dropped to a 5-6 card and are tied with the Letran Knights and EAC Generals for fourth seed.
Javee Mocon stepped up for the Red Lions with 17 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field topped with 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks, while Davon Potts marked his season-high 16 points.
Robert Bolick and Clint Doliguez, who both returned from one-game suspension, added 11 and five points for the win.
Calisaan had a game-high 23 points, while Allyn Bulanadi chipped in 12 markers.
