The San Beda Red Lions fought their way through the Arellano University, 83-72 on Thursday, to secure a twice-to-beat advantage in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
San Beda clinched their 12th game winning streak behind the efforts of Javee Mocon, who led the Red Lions with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists along with Jeramer Cabanag, who finished with his career-best 14 points and two rebounds.
Meanwhile, Robert Bolick continued to power San Beda with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as Donald Tankoua added 11 markers and five boards to defeat the Chiefs and claim the win.
“As what I’ve always said to my players, we only have to take good care of ourselves. We cannot pray for other teams to lose, other teams to win, because all we have to do is take care of ourselves and win our games,” said Coach Boyet Fernandez.
It was a hard-earned win for the Red Lions as the Chiefs held a powerful force behind the heroics of Kent Salado and Michael Canete, who led Arellano cut the deficit to four, 67-63.
However, San Beda was able to limit the power duo as Cabanag and AC Soberano led a 9-0 run to overtake a 13-point lead, 76-63.
“I give credit to Coach Jerry and Arellano, because they really prepared for us this day,” noted Fernandez.
Salado led Arellano with 17 points, three assists and two rebounds, while Canete and Kraniel Viloria finished with 15 points each in the defeat.
