Kent Salado once again drove the Arellano Chiefs to victory after a game-winning shot on the overtime period over the Jose Rizal University in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament, 73-72, Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With only 0.3 seconds left on the clock, Salado drove past big man Abdel Poutouochi’s outstretched arms and shot the winning point.
“We are so happy, we don’t know how to describe it,” stated Arellano Coach Jerry Codinera during the post-game interview. “Grabe yung game. This is the only way we build our trust on one another.”
The Chiefs could have finished the game in the last period, but guard Salado missed his shot with only 9 seconds left. JRU’s Jed Mendoza grabbed the opportunity and shot a basket from the three-point line with only 0.2 left and sent the game to an overtime, 62-all.
It was also Mendoza who paced the Heavy Bombers to an advantage, four seconds remaining, 72-71. But Salado’s winning shot ended JRU’s chance of victory.
Salado capped off the victory with 25 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. Zach Nicholls added 13 points and four rebounds while Lervin Flores added seven markers and 15 rebounds.
JRU MJ Dela Virgen paced the squad with 15 points and four rebounds. Tey Teodoro added another 15 points and three rebounds.
The Chiefs will face Lyceum on Tuesday, July 25 while JRU will take on the Letran Knights on Friday, July 21.
