MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum of the Philippines took a convincing win over University of Perpetual Help once again, 89-74, to claim solo second in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball tournament on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
With the win, the Pirates improved to an 8-3 win-loss record behind defending champion San Beda Red Lions, 10-0, as both teams brace for a possible third consecutive championship clash.
The Pirates had a hard time shaking off the Altas in the first half, settling instead with a one-point lead, 40-39.
However, last year’s runner-up went in for a 26-14 blast in the third quarter to get away from Perpetual.
The Altas threatened as Rey Peralta and Ben Adamos combined for back-to-back baskets in the fourth period, inching within 10, 75-65, six minutes left in the game.
But, the Marcelino twins and Raymar Caduyac still got some tricks up their sleeves and combined for another 10-0 blast that gave them an 85-65 advantage, four minutes left. Perpetual went in for a 9-4 run, but it was not enough to defeat Lyceum.
JC Marcelino finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Mike Nzeusseu had 21 markers and five boards. Caduyac flirted with a double-double record with 11 points and nine rebounds.
For the Altas, Peralta led them with 20 points, while Adamos added 15 markers in the losing effort as they dropped to a 3-7 slate in the tournament.
