The defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers are off to a good start in their title defense campaign with a five-set win against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in UAAP Women’s Volleyball, 25-22, 25-17, 26-24, 25-23, 15-7, Wednesday, at FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
La Salle convincingly won the first two sets, but they squandered their 2-0 advantage as they allowed FEU to take the third and fourth set.
The Lady Spikers are already at match point in the third frame, 24-23, but Kim Dy was blocked at the net by Bernadette Pons. The Lady Tamaraws got the next two points concluded by a drop ball by Pons to fool the three blockers put up by La Salle.
FEU maintained their momentum in the fourth set, but not without the threat from La Salle as they inched closer in the latter part of the set, 23-24. Fortunately for the Lady Tamaraws, Heather Guinoo pulled off a service ace to force the Lady Spikers in a deciding fifth set.
The fifth set started with a toe-to-toe battle between the two teams, tying the match at 5-all. That is when a block by Aduke Ogunsanya on Pons started a 10-2 run by La Salle to escape FEU.
Former Finals MVP Kim Dy topscored for La Salle with 18 points, with her batchmate Majoy Baron contributing 16 markers.
All of the three games of FEU this season are five-setters, but the lack of finishing touch continues to haunt them as they lost two of their three games for a 1-2 win-loss card.
Bernadette Pons led FEU both in offense and defense with 20 attack points and 22 excellent digs.
Player of the Game: Dawn Macandili, 34 excellent digs and 13 excellent receptions
