CEBU CITY—The juniors and seniors squads of the University of the Visayas (UV) met contrasting fates at the start of the semifinal round of the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (CESAFI) Partners’ Cup last Monday, July 29, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers punched a championship ticket after they disposed of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors but the Baby Lancers couldn’t follow suit as they bowed to the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 57-69.
The two UV teams went into their respective matches armed with twice-to-beat bonus.
The Green Lancers wasted no time in advancing to the Finals as they banked on the crucial plays of Gileant Delator to fend off the Warriors.
USC looked headed to forcing a rubbermatch when it erected a 13-point lead in the second quarter. UV easily erased the deficit and was already ahead, 54-52, at the turn.
The Warriors regained the upper-hand, 60-58, but Lass Coulibally and Jancork Cabahug sparked a huge run that shoved the Green Lancers to a 68-60 lead.
USC threatened at 70-73 but Delator dropped a booming triple, giving the Green Lancers a crucial six-point lead with only 11 seconds left.
Coulibally topped UV with 23 points while Cabahug and Delator donated 14 and 13, respectively.
Kurt Trangia paced the eliminated Warriors with 18 points.
On the other hand, Mike Boniel spearheaded the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles’ crucial win by firing 15 points. Reymark Narbasa chipped in 12, while LA Casinillo chipped in 11.
The Baby Lancers got 21 points from Albert Sacayan and 10 from Fritz Banzon.
