Far Eastern University continued to improve its UAAP season 79 campaign with a convincing win, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, that sent University of the Philippines to a two-game skid, Wednesday, March 1 at the FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan.
After looking invincible in their first four outings—wherein they only dropped two sets—the weakness of the UP Lady Maroons in their reception seemed to have been exposed by Ateneo in their last game and yesterday, have been taken advantage of by the FEU Lady Tamaraws all throughout the match.
FEU bombarded the Diliman-based squad with heavy serves early in the first set, disrupting the plays of UP, which worked as Isa Molde was left scoreless in the set.
Despite being down 20-23 in the second set and losing Nicole Tiamzon to an injury, UP fought back with Tots Carlos leading the way to tie the game at 24-all. An attack by Carlos followed by a block on Malabanan gave the set to UP.
UP tried to keep the momentum in the next two sets, but the problem in their first ball continued to haunt them as they failed to complete the comeback.
Bernadette Pons starred for the Lady Tamarawas with another triple-double, 24 points alongside 23 excellent digs and 14 excellent receptions. Remy Palma and Chin Bases added 11 points apiece.
Team captain Ayel Estranero dished out 61 excellent sets, but only Carlos finished the game in double-digits on top of her 27 excellent digs.
FEU tied UP at the third spot with a 4-2 slate.
Player of the Game: Bernadette Pons, 24 points (22 attacks, 2 blocks), 23 excellent digs, and 14 excellent receptions
