MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University took a massive fourth quarter run to defeat University of Santo Tomas, 78-71, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Soaring Falcons overturned a third quarter 10-points deficit against Growling Tigers as Fil-Peruvian Val Chauca led a 16-0 blast in the final period to nab their third win in the tournament.
With the win, Adamson improved their standing in the tournament and tied with UST with a 3-2 slate.
“First of all, we needed that win. As you all know what happened to us the last game,” said Adamson head coach Franz Pumaren, referring to their devastating overtime loss to University of the Philippines last Sunday, 83-82.
“I just had to tell everybody, stay within the course, and of course, we got a big lift from Val,” added Pumaren.
Chauca made most of the crucial baskets that led them to victory as he finished with 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Jerrick Ahanmisi was also there to lead the way with 24 markers on 9-of-19 shooting.
Without Rhenz Abando suffering from leg pain and Paraiso called for his fifth foul, along Mark Nonoy’s attempt for a trey failed, Adamson easily cruised to victory from there. Adamson outscored UST, 30-13 in the final frame.
Soulemane Chabi Yo had a double-double record of 17 points and 15 rebounds for UST, while CJ Cansino, Concepcion, and Nonoy had 10 points each in the losing effort.
