CEBU CITY—The JoeMang’s Surplus-University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters got a huge lift from one of their new recruits as they beat the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 84-79, last Sunday, June 16, in the college division of the 2019 Cesafi Partner’s Cup at the Cebu Coliseum.
Tristan Albina, the former University of the Visayas (UV) gunner, was remarkable in his debut with the Webmasters as he led all scorers with 17 points as UC listed its third straight victory.
With Albina, a two-time Cesafi three-point shooting champion, Darrell Shane Menina and John Jabello leading the charge, the Webmasters threatened to break the game wide open when they erected a 56-39 lead in the third period.
The Panthers, however, roared back and came within three points twice—the last was at 76-79 in the closing minutes.
UC weathered the storm by ending the game with a 6-0 blast.
Menina scored 16, while John Jabello added 13.
Aljie Mendez netted 13, while Karl Langahin had 11 in USPF’s second loss in as many games.
In the high school division, the ARQ Builders-University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers kept their unbeaten slate intact after they pulled off a 68-65 overtime win over arch-rivals Cebu Landmasters-SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles.
Maynard Bajo keyed UV’s third straight victory by firing 18 points. Albert Sacayan donated 15, while Christian Alilin pitched in 10.
Mike Boniel paced the Magis Eagles with 14 points.
Also winning were the USPF Baby Panther, who outlasted the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 75-69.
