CEBU CITY—The Southwestern University (SWU) Phinma Cobras pulled off a huge shocker when they took down the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 91-73, in Game 1 of the 2019 Cesafi Partners’ Cup Best-of-Three Finals last Friday, August 2, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras torched the defending champions with their torrid outside shooting as they sank a total of 12 triples to take a crucial 1-0 series lead.
Shaq Imperial and William Polican combined for nine of SWU’s total made triples with the former scattering 21 points and the former pumping in 19.
Dyll Roncall chipped in 14 points, while Red Cachuela and Lamine Thiam also played key roles in the Cobras’ balanced offense by pitching in 10 markers apiece.
While the Cobras had no trouble scoring, the Green Lancers struggled mightily on offense as Jancork Cabahug was the lone UV player to score in twin digits with 13.
The Cobras caught fire from the get go and cruised till the final buzzer after building a 32-12 lead.
Baby Jaguars near crown after clipping Magis Eagles
In the high school division, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars moved a win away from the crown after they beat the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 61-56.
Ateneo was quick to post an early 16-7 lead but USJ-R didn’t look back after stealing the driver’s seat 36-24.
Diether Go paced the Baby Jaguars with h 17 points. Kevin Guibao scored 14, while Kendrick Abatayo added 13.
Ariel Dinglasan and LA Casinillo topped Ateneo with 14 and 13 markers, respectively.
