Ateneo keeps their heart strong after pulling off an incredible stunt to defeat the Far Eastern Universtiy, 94-82 on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Thirdy Ravena boosted the Blue Eagles to keep a clean 3-0 slate in the season with a double-double record of 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
FEU tried to cut the deficit late in the fourth as Arvin Tolentino shot a triple for the Tamaraws, 87-78, but Matt Nieto answered back with another booming triple, to keep their lead up to 12, 90-78. Anton Asistio missed a trey for the Blue Eagles, but Ravena tipped it in the basket to cap off the match.
Coach Sandy Arespacochaga is proud of what his team have done, but would like to see more improvement with their defense after letting the Tamaraws score more than what they planned.
“It is a high scoring game and we shot well from the field, even from the three-point line,” added Arespacochaga. “We’re happy to come off with a win, especially since this is our third game in eight days.”
Asistio added 16 points, while Nieto finished with 11 points for the win.
Third year Wendell Comboy led the Tamaraws with 12 points, while Orizu and Tolentino finished with 11 points each for the defeat, as FEU dropped to a 1-2 card in the team standings.
