Ateneo tallies first win, fends off La Salle in straight sets

By Ardyn Gonzales

The Ateneo de Manila University returns to the winning column as they swept De La Salle University, 25-20, 25-19, 27-25, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s volleyball tournament, Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After a disappointing first game last Wednesday, the Blue Eagles were in a new aura coming into the match.

With their offense and defense on point, they quickly registered a 2-0 lead in the match.

However, it was a tight contest in the third set, as after tying the game at 23-all, Ateneo setter Egie Magadia fell short with his service.

Both teams exchanged points until Kurt Aguilar gave Ateneo the advantage with a well-placed drop ball, followed by a kill block from Ron Medalla to complete the straight set victory.

Middle blocker Chu Njigha was a force at the net, leading Ateneo with 20 points on 18 attacks and two kill blocks. Kurt Aguilar and Ron Medalla provided the necessary support, conniving for 25 markers.

Meanwhile, only John Mark Ronquillo starred for the Green Spikers with 11 points.
