Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles exacted revenge on their opening game tormentors Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws via a three-set victory, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 in UAAP Women’s Volleyball, Wednesday, at FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan City.
Coach Tai surprised everyone as he converted Ponggay Gaston as a libero, replacing Dani Ravena who is still recovering from appendectomy. The adjustment was effective as they limited the service aces of FEU to just 3, compared to the whopping season-high 20 service aces of the Lady Tamaraws in their first round match-up.
Ateneo came out eager in the first set, establishing a 19-14 advantage led by the unanswered down-the-line attacks of Kat Tolentino. They maintained their five-point lead towards reaching the set point, concluded by a quick attack by Bea de Leon.
The Lady Eagles played consistently all throughout the match, starting strong in every set and keeping the momentum on their side to close out each set.
Jhoana Maraguinot top-scored for Ateneo with 15 points built on 14 attacks, including the two consecutive game-clinching hits.
Chin Basas was the lone player of FEU who scored in double-figure with 10 points. Bernadette Pons was not in her usual game as she was limited to only 5 markers.
Player of the Game: Kat Tolentino, 11 points (11 attacks)
