The streaking University of Sto. Tomas Lady Tigresses remain undefeated as they made quick work of the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, 25-19, 25-16- 25-19, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Sporting their new Kobe 8 sneakers, UST played inspired volleyball and dominated Ateneo on all fronts, from offense to defense throughout the match. Angge Poyos, Reg Jurado, and Em Banagua connived for a swift and easy 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Eagles showed signs of life in the second half of the third set when they forced a 15-all deadlock. But there was no stopping the Lady Tigresses as they rode on a counter run to widen the gap.
Lyann de Guzman attempted to pace Ateneo down the stretch, but with Poyos in the frontline, UST made it rain in attacks to complete the sweep.
Poyos tallied career-high 26 points in just three sets, built on 21 attacks, two kill blocks, and three service aces – making a case for another Rookie-MVP contender. Reg Jurado added 12 markers and 10 excellent digs as UST registered their best start in the elimination in recent memory.
Meanwhile, only de Guzman tallied a double-digit output with 11 points. Ateneo suffered another loss and fell down to a 1-4 record.
