CEBU CITY—The three-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers ended the first round of elimination on a high note after they pulled off a fight-marred a 102-82 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers on Tuesday, October 1, in the college division of the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
UV ended the first round at solo number one spot with five wins and one loss but the victory came at a price after Gileant Delator and Jiesel Tarrosa were tossed in the third period for unsportsmanlike behavior.
The two UV players were in the middle of a shoving match with USPF’s Sameen Swint and Mhike Patalinghug that led to their ejection.
The skirmish in the third period seemed to have sparked the Green Lancers as Lass Coulibally dominated the paint while Froiland Maglasang buried three trifectas, allowing UV to take a 78-61 lead going into the fourth period.
Maglasang topped UV with 15 points, Melvin Butohan pitched in 14, Sheldon Gahi added 12, Jancork Cabahug and Michael Maestre donated 11 apiece, while Saga and Coulibally contributed 10 each.
Swint scored 16 points, while Lyndon Colina had 15 for USPF, which slipped to 3-3 (win-loss).
