Dave Yu gave the boost National University needed, as they faced the University of the East at the start of the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament, and took an 86-69 win on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
It was not an easy win to take for the Bulldogs, as they knotted at 42-all in the third frame, but Yu shot five consecutive baskets in the 17-3 run that extended their lead against the Red Warriors to as high as 17 points, 82-67.
“There are a lot of things to work on, because there are a lot of mistakes and a lot of excitement. It is always hard to play the opening game,” said new NU Coach Jamike Jarin.
Yu finished with an efficient 5-of-8 shooting from the field and had 14 points. Meanwhile, Reggie Morido added 12 points and six rebounds and team captain JJay Alejandro finished with 11 points, five rebounds, seven assists and five steals for the win.
Senegalese import Issa Gaye also drove the Bulldogs make their debut win after finishing a nearly double-double record of 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
On the other hand, Alvin Pasaol led the UE Red Warriors with 14 points, while Mark Maloles and Rey Acuno had 10 points each.
