CEBU CITY—The defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers emerged victorious at the start of the second round of the men’s division of the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last Thursday, September 20.
The Lancers banked on a blistering second half attack to down the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras, 70-51, while the Panthers dominated the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 87-79.
Reigning MVP Rey Suerte showed the way for the Green Lancers by piling up 26 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Agile forward Jancork Cabahug added 12 points and seven rebounds as UV pocketed its fourth win in seven games.
Shaquille Imperial finished 14 points and Red Cachuela chipped in 13 for the struggling Cobras, who suffered their sixth straight defeat to drop to 1-6 (win-loss).
RR Cauba, on the other hand, collected 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a block as the Panthers continued their impressive run in the season with their fifth win in seven games.
High-scoring rookie Kenny Rogers Rocacurva fired 20, Kevin Oleodo pitched in 14, Clark Con-Ui and Jessie Aloro donated 11 apiece, while Jemcerson Sable tallied 10 but the balanced scoring failed to save CIT-U from absorbing its seventh loss in as many games
