CEBU CITY—The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers bucked the absence of two key players and surged to their sixth victory via a 90-80 thumping of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers on Tuesday, October 8, in the college division of the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Lass Coulibally produced 23 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and three blocks as the Green Lancers duplicated their first round of elimination victory over the same USPF squad to hike their record to 6-1 (win-loss).
UV turned to its glaring heft and size advantage to ice the win as big men Melvin Butohan, Michael Maestre and Monic Soliva all scored in double figures and combined for 34 points.
The productive showings of their big men allowed UV to survive the absence of guards Gileant Delator and Jiesel Tarrosa, who sat out to serve one-game suspensions for their ejections in the team’s last ouring.
It was UPF’s fifth loss in eight matches.
Prior to the Green Lancers’ dominant win, the Baby Lancers scored their own convincing win after they dumped the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Baby Wildcats, 89-62.
The Baby Lancers bounced back from a shocking 61-67 loss to the Don Bosco Greywolves behind the Rodney Abangan, who erupted for 23 points.
Abangan unloaded 16 of his total output in the first half that saw UV erecting a huge 40-23 lead that sealed their fifth win in six games.
Sol Jade Tirol tallied a game-high 26 points for CIT-U, which absorbed its fifth straight defeat to drop to 1-5.
