THE Growling Tigers managed to cleave to their point lead in the last quarter against University of the East (UE) 88-87, claiming their first victory in the UAAP Men’s basketball on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) crowd were almost at the edge of their seats, as the Tigers started on the wrong foot at the game with a 15-point deficit, 21-6.

Henri Subido led the Tigers to close the score to 39-47, after exploding with four triples in the start of the second quarter.

UST recovered in the third, taking a five-point lead with Jon Sheriff and Dean Lee adding 7 and 5 points, respectively closing the quarter 69-64.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers pushed their biggest advantage in the game with 78-66. The Red Warriors did not back down, closing the gap and scoring one point behind the Tigers, 85-86, with 42 seconds left on the clock.

With a few seconds left, UE’s last 2-point shot was not enough to drive the game into an overtime.

Coach Boy Sablan said that the Tigers had a rough first half of the game because of their adjustments while playing against UE, wherein they focused on defense.

“Dumipensa kami eh. Nag-adjust kami ng depensa, so (nung) nakuha na ng mga bata yung rhythm nila, gumanda din ‘yung game after ng adjustment namin nung second half,” said Sablan.

Subido finished off with towering 26-points and four rebounds. While Sheriff and Lee contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively.
