USJ-R, UV clinch twice-to-beat advantage
CEBU CITY—The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors posted blowout wins to complete the semifinal pairings in the 2018 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday, October 9, at the Cebu Coliseum here.
The Jaguars pulled off a 106-77 drubbing of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats while the Warriors trashed the Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma Cobras, 82-60.
A three-way logjam marked the end of the double-round elimination phase with USJ-R, University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters all posting 9-3 (win-loss) records.
The triple-tie was broken via quotient system with USJ-R logging the highest point difference at 1.08 that allowed them to secure a twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinal round.
UV nabbed the second and final twice-to-beat edge with its quotient of 0.99.
UC fell to third spot with a quotient of 0.91. Failing to clinch a crucial twice-to-beat incentive was somewhat disappointing for the Webmasters as they started the season strong following eight straight wins.
USC also ended up with the same record with the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers at 5-7 but the nabbed the last semifinal seat owing to their superior quotient.
Thus in the semis, which will start on October 20, USJ-R will take on USC, while UV will battle UC in a rematch of last season’s finals series.
