The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons escaped the upset-seeking University of the East Lady Warriors in a hard-earned five-set win, 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, in the opening match of the UAAP women’s volleyball Season 81, Saturday, at the FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan.
Expectations were high for the Lady Maroons due to successful off-season exposures, but they were put into an unfamiliar situation early in the season after being down 2-1 in their first match.
UP quickly recovered in the fourth frame and mounted a 10-1 lead, but the firepower of Judith Abil and Mean Mendrez propelled the Lady Warriors to inch closer and cut down the lead at 15-13. However, the momentum stayed with the Lady Maroons as they were able to close out the set and the game convincingly to deny UE of their upset attempt, thanks to the clutch plays by Jessma Ramos who played off the bench for UP.
The duo of Isa Molde and team captain Tots Carlos combined for 40 points. They also had help from their batchmate Justin Dorog who contributed 13 markers after going back to her original position as an open spiker.
Judith Abil led the offense of UE with 17 attack points, but it was the defense of reigning best libero Kat Arado who kept them alive all throughout the match with whopping 32 excellent digs and 18 excellent receptions.
