Fourth year guard Teytey Teodoro was unstoppable as he led the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers extinguish the fire among the San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ home crowd and defeated the Golden Stags in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament, 73-62 on Thursday.
Teodoro exploded all his 15 points in the second half with back-to-back triples on the last five minutes of the game to make way for the Heavy Bombers to lead over the Golden Stags, 64-58.
JRU almost had a slim chance of winning the game after losing hold of a 10-point advantage, 52-42, entering the fourth period as a combination of baskets from Allyn Bulanadi and Jayson David knotted the scores to 58-all.
However, Teodoro solidified the Heavy Bombers ground as he went off with back-to-back treys followed by another corner triple from Jed Mendoza, while Ervin Grospe added a basket and Abdulwahab Abdulrazak capped it all with a slam, leaving the Golden Stags with only 21.0 seconds to play.
San Sebastian struggled to keep their pace without the leadership of top scorer Michael Calisaan, who is serving his one-game suspension after his ejection from their last game against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday.
David led the Golden Stags with 18 points and six rebounds, while Bulanadi added 14 points and seven rebounds and Renzo Navarro had 13 points.
Teodoro finished with 19 points and three rebounds, while Abdulrazak had 13 points and seven reounds. Grospe added 10 points on top of six rebounds and two assists, while Mendoza contributed nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.
JRU is on a three-game winning streak at a 5-3 win-loss record in the team standings and hopes to extend the streak as they face Mapua Cardinals on Tuesday to cap off their first round in the tournament.
San Sebastian ended their first round with a 4-5 slate.
