Team UAAP Ateneo -PH bags women’s volley bronze medal in the 17th ASEAN University Games

TEAM UAAP Philippines repeated over Malaysia, 25-11, 25-11, 25-16, to
capture the women’s volleyball bronze medal in the 17th ASEAN University
Games yesterday in Palembang, Indonesia.

It was the country’s first international women’s volleyball medal
since the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, as the Filipina spikers, composed of
standouts from UAAP champion Ateneo, ended their stint with three wins
against two losses.

Alyssa Valdez once again led the charge for Team UAAP-Philippines
with 16 hits, while Ella de Jesus added 14 points.

Bea de Leon continue to sparkle even on international play, as the
former Poveda standout scored two blocks to finish with nine points, while
Michelle Morente also contributed nine markers.

The Filipina spikers needed only 61 minutes to dispose the
Malaysians, whom they beat in four sets in the prelimaries.

As the region’s biggest competition for student athletes enters the
halfway mark, Team UAAP-Philippines now has a 4-4-5 gold-silver-bronze
medals in fifth place.

The Filipinos earlier got a 4-4-4 gold-silver-bronze medal tally in
taekwondo to finish second behind Thailand.

Action in table tennis opened yesterday, as Team UAAP-Philippines
wasted a 2-1 lead to bow to the Thailand, 2-3, in the women’s play, while
the men’s team lost to Indonesia, 0-3.

The Thais are pulling away in the standings with 18 golds, seven
silvers and seven bronze medals, followed by host Indonesia (14-21-8),
Malaysia (8-8-10) and Laos (4-5-9).
