CEBU CITY—Team Slaughter leaned on the speedy tandem of Rey Suerte and Jaybie Mantilla to outlast Team Fajardo, 125-100, in the 2018 Cesafi All-Star Game on Sunday, October 14, at the Cebu Coliseum here.
University of the Visayas’ (UV) stalwart Suerte, the league’s MVP in 2016, collected 21 points, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals to snag the All-Star Game MVP award.
Mantilla, the top notch playmaker of the University of San Jose-Recoletos who is the 2017 league MVP, flirted with a triple-double with 17 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
Suerte and Mantilla were joined in the Mythical Five by University of San Carlos’ John Reel Saycon, John Jabello of University of Cebu and Kenny Rocacurva of Cebu Institute of Technology-University.
Saycon paced Team Fajardo wth 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jabello and Rocacurva added 13 each.
In the secondary division, the UV connection of Joshua Yerro, Gabriel Cometa, Beirn Anthony Laurente and Mar Leandro Actub powered Team Desiderio to a 110-86 dismantling of Team Tallo.
Yerro, who secured the All-Star MVP accolade, topped Team Desiderio with 24 points. Actub and Laurente tallied 15 points each, while Cometa chipped in 14.
In the skills competition, Actub wowed the crowd with a tomahawk slam in the final round to pocket the slam dunk competition crown, beating defending champion Miguel Gastador of USJ-R.
Saycon emerged as the top shooter after collaring the three-point shootout crown.
Saycon dropped 17 points in the final round to beat Christopher Isabelo of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and teammate Froilan Mangubat, who finished with 15 points apiece.
