SWU escapes USC, takes solo lead at 3-0

CEBU CITY–The Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras took sole possession of the leadership after they edged out the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 62-59, on Saturday, September 21, in the senior’s division of the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Shaq Imperial scored on a putback then William Rosebelt Polican dropped two crucial free throws that sealed the Cobras’ third win in as many games.

The Warriors led for the large part of the game and even took a four-point cushion in the final minute only to lose grip of the match en route to suffering their second loss in five games.

Lamine Thiam was the high man for the Cobras with 24 markers.

Kurt Ian Trangia topped USC with 18 points.

In the other senior’s game, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters picked up their second win in four games via an 81-64 spanking of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.

Abi Galinato and import Tosh Sesay led Webmasters with 17 points each.

Renz Solomon produced 11 points for the Jaguars, who dropped to 1-2.


In the high school division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles barged into the win column by taking down the Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) Greywolves, 69-59, while the UC Baby Webmasters improved to 3-0 via a 65-60 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT-U) Wildkittens.
