The San Beda Red Cubs put on a dazzling display of its offensive prowess and tenacious defense as it hammered the Xavier Golden Stallions, 89-59, to claim their first Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship on Saturday at the Chang Kai Shek College Gym.
In anticipation of the showdown between the NCAA and Tiong Lian schools, supporters from Xavier trooped to the gym to support their players only to be disappointed by the lack of intensity shown by the team that beat Chang Kai Shek and National University en route to the finals. So dominating were the Red Cubs that it shot 59 percent from the field and out-rebounded Xavier, 52-29. They also had 22 assists compared to just 11 by Xavier.
Finals MVP Andrei Caracut and Chami Diputado led the early scoring barrage for San Beda as they took a huge 41-19 lead at the end of the half. Tyler Tio led the Stallions with 15 points.
San Beda took the championship trophy as well as P50,000 in the tournament sponsored by Blackwater-Ever Bilena, Freego, Rain or Shine, Dickies Underwear, Hapee Toothpaste, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum and MEC Computers.
The PSSBC also awarded the top players in the tournament. Joining the Mythical Selection are Darius Estrella of Jose Rizal University, Denniel Aguirre of Mapua Institute of Technology, Chami Diputado of San Beda College, Chris Fajarito of Far Eastern University, John Vincent Gallego of Chiang Kai Shek College, Jollo Go of Hope Christian High School, Mark Dyke of National University, and Tyler Tio of Xavier School
In the battle for third, the NU Bullpups beat the FEU Baby Tamaraws, 63-59, in what could be a preview of 2 top UAAP juniors basketball teams.
