San Beda edges San Sebastian, gets share of top spot

Manila, Philippines – Defending champions San Beda University streaked to their seventh consecutive win after defeating San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 82-75 on Thursday in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Red Lions now ties with Lyceum of the Philippines University at the top spot of the tournament with a 13-1 win-loss record, which meant they are assured of a spot in the Final 4 playoffs.

San Sebastian was hard to shake off, but San Beda managed to create a 10-point cushion coming into the second half, 47-37.

The Golden Stags was persistent in the third quarter. With Allyn Bulanadi taking the lead, he orchestrated a rally sparked by 14 of his own points that gave San Sebastian some hope to turn the game around, 60-63.

But Javee Mocon and Robert Bolick stopped them at the final period as they exploded back-to-back baskets for a 12-4 rally.

San Beda made four triples with only less than two minutes on the clock, two of which came from Mocon that stretched their lead to 10 again, 82-72, and seal the deal.

Mocon led San Beda with a double-double record of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Bolick had 18 markers, four boards and four assists.

Donald Tankoua added another double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds for the win.

On the other hand, Bulanadi led the Golden Stags with 23 points, while RK Ilagan had 20 markers, three rebounds and four assists as they dropped to a 4-10 slate.
