CEBU CITY—Dreaded shooter Albert Sacayan dropped a three-pointer with four-tenths of a second left and the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers completed an elimination round sweep with a 72-70 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars in the high school division of the 2019 Cesafi Partner’s Cup last Thursday, July 11, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Baby Jaguars took a 70-69 lead inside the final minute and even had the chance to widen the gap when Diether Go was sent to the free throw line.
Go, however, wilted under pressure and bungled his two free throws. USJ-R paid dearly for not capitalizing on the opportunity as Sacayan dropped a trifecta in the next play.
UV, thus, ended the eliminations with a clean 8-0 (win-loss) card and will be the number one seed in the semifinal round.
Sacayan tallied 17 points, while Zylle Cabellon donated 15.
Kevin Guibao scored 19, Dilcer Gaviola contributed 16, Go netted 13 and Kendrick Abarquez delivered 10 for USJ-R, which slid to 6-2.
In the college division, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters pocketed their fifth win in eight matches by blowing out the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 80-58.
Darrell Shane Menina poured in 22 points, John Jabello scattered 21, import Tosh Sesay chipped in 16, Paul Galinato cashed in 11 as UC used a balanced offense to lead from start to finish and even built lead by as many as 30 points.
Sommy Managor coughed up 27 points in the Warriors’ fourth defeat in seven games.
